The times they are a-changin’. In fact they were changing before Bob Dylan released his classic in 1964, and they will continue to change forever. But the shift in the way we work is one of the biggest since the Industrial Revolution. Over the years, working from home has been considered a luxury. Or an oddity. And recently, a necessity. Assess your spaceEveryone’s different and so are everyone’s prerequisites, both when it comes to space and where they are most productive. If you have a dedicated home office and lots of space you might want to consider a great office chair. You know the ones with good back support, adjustable height and armrests, and a comfortable seat cushion. Pair the chair with a height-adjustable desk that allows you to switch between sitting and standing positions, and you’ve covered the basics. But what if you have limited space and need to work at your kitchen table? Yeah, an office chair needs its space and might not fit in aesthetically in your dining room. Well, good news! Working standing up is actually a winner. Get a foldable desk to put on your dining table and simply fold it and put it away at the end of the day. Organization and storageClean desk, clean mind. Adequate storage is important to keep your workspace organized and clutter-free. Consider adding shelves, especially desk shelves where your work related items are easily reachable. If you have the space you should get some drawers, and cabinets to keep your workspace tidy and organized. There are many ways to make your workspace look and feel homey and the easiest is probably a nice desk mat. It not only defines your space but it’s an analog aid to your digital workday, and protects your table surface from scratches.

Let there be lightGood lighting is crucial for a comfortable and productive workspace. Natural light is best, so position your desk near a window if possible. If natural light is limited (read: Swedish winter), consider adding task lighting or a light bar over your screen, to illuminate your work surface, and ambient lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. If you’re in a lot of online meetings you should definitely try a ring light to ensure you’re looking your best. Everytime.

Keep connectedThis is a given, but make sure you have a reliable internet connection and all the necessary technology to get your work done efficiently. If you’re working in parts of the world where there's the occasional power outage, you may also want to invest in a backup battery. If wifi is a problem, consider upgrading your wifi points or connecting directly to ethernet. The audience is listeningStarting your own podcast has never been easier. And you don’t need a lot of space. However, a high-quality microphone, soundproofing, and producing skills are necessary. And maybe a good quality webcam if you want to stream your show. Now find your unique subject and an audience.
